Being 2,277 metres long, the 25th April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is the longest suspension bridge in Europe. It has two levels, the upper level for cars and the lower, added in 1999, for trains.
After 45 months of building work, the 25th April Bridge was opened to traffic on 6th August 1966, with the name Salazar Bridge. When the Carnation Revolution of 25th April 1974 ended, it was given its current name.
It was soon compared with the Golden Gate in San Francisco because of the similarities, and because they were built by the same company.
